October 2004:

Adams Steak & Eggs: Sirloin steak well done, 2 eggs supposedly over easy, hash browns, toast

11 October - Jasmine Bistro:

We decided to go out for dinner tonight to celebrate the wife's promotion (she's now a Service Captain, whatever that means)...

We got a late start because they needed the Boy to work a couple of hours overtime in his old department.

When we got there, we had to ask the host to send us a waitress even though there were only 4 parties for the 2 waitresses on the floor.

To start with, we had the free deep fried wontons with sweet & sour sauce.

We ordered a la cart: Shrimp Filled Wontons with 2 sauces (similar to the shrimp and scallop wontons served at dim sum here), Spicy Shrimp and Scallops in a fried basket, very similar to the fish basket at S&M, Orange Chicken with hot peppers (same flavors as the Orange Beef at S&M as well, but spicier), steamed rice, fried rice, the wife had a pot of jasmine tea. the Boy had a Coke and I had my usual iced tea.

It came to a total of $43 with a 15% tip, even though we were a bit miffed about the lack of service earlier.

19 October - Adams Steak & Eggs: (See photo at top of page)

I have been meaning to check this place out for quite some time and finally got around to it this morning.

It's on Hotel Circle @ I-8, a place I drive by as many as 8 times a day...

It's raining out there and it's a perfect morning for a hearty, stick to your ribs (whatever that means) breakfast.

I had been there for close to 5 minutes before someone greeted me (it's a small, small place) and I was considering getting up and leaving.

And my food sat in the window for close to 5 minutes but was still moderately warm when served.

As you may know, we try to sit where we can see the window to the kitchen and have also been known to listen to the food cook so we know when the order is up (most restaurant people develop these habits over time).

I had the Sirloin steak well done, 2 eggs over easy, hash browns, sour dough toast and a can of Coke.

Notice the grill marks on the steak, it was pretty tender and flavorful but I ended up leaving the very center portion of it as it wasn't quite well done enough for my tastes (as you may know, I order my steak well done).

Also notice the large grate and green bell pepper in the hash browns.

They "drug the toast" (didn't start it on time) and the food cooled even more after taking it out from under the heat lamp and they eventually served it and went back for the toast, which was thick and well saturated with that artificial butter and came with 2 small Knott's Berry Farm jelly packets (strawberry and blueberry)

After taxes, the bill came to $11.30 with another $2 for a tip for a total of $13.30.

A few notes: The wife had applied there as an assistant manager a couple of years before we moved here.

And now it's 11:00 AM, still raining lightly and it looks like it's the perfect time for a late morning nap in the chair (I get up at 5:00 AM and hey, I'm old, it's OK every once in a while!)...

23 October - La Torta Mexican Deli:

The Boy and I split a Maricela (Number 6), which is named after a woman The Darla works with at La Jolla Country Club.

Their family owns the local chain and she sometimes also works at this location (but not today).

This particular unit features some excellent sidewalk seating right in downtown La Mesa and there are 4 other locations throughout the county

The No. 6 torta consists of bread, roast beef, bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, guacamole with "home style" fries, and with our 2 sodas (no Coke, Pepsi) it came to a total of $10.27.

And it cost us another 50 cents in parking as the meters seem to work on the weekends there too...

The place also features a salsa bar, a wall of sodas, beer and water and Mexican sodas from the fountain (I haven't tried them yet but will soon).

We both agreed that the bread was good but the fries were almost cold (don't get me started!) and the place could use a little cleaning.

See their web site here: http://www.latorta.com/

25 October - La Torta Mexican Deli II:

This time, the wife and I made it over to La Mesa for a quick lunch on Monday, her day off.

We sat outside at a table on the sidewalk again, even if it was slightly cool and overcast this morning.

We shared a Carne Asada Torta (thinly sliced beef, cheddar cheese, bread, shredded lettuce, a slice of tomato, mayo and guacamole).

Both the wife and the Boy have commented on how much they liked the bun.

The wife also doctored her half with Cholulu sauce, smoked and pickled jalapenos with lemon and their own hot sauce from the salsa bar.

The beef was a little too done and leathery, the fries were warmer this time (but still not hot) and they'd obviously cleaned up since Saturday (maybe we caught it right after the lunch rush on our first visit).

Our total with a Slice, which we shared, was just over $9 ($8.99) plus a quarter for an hour on the parking meter.

27 October - Jasmine Bistro:

Our evening started out with dinner at Jasmine, in the mall here and ended up at an Alice Cooper concert at a local casino (separate message).

Wild Bill had never been to Jasmine (or to see Alice) and since we had been there at least half a dozen times, plus dim sum almost that many times as well, he relied on us for most of the menu selection. For appetizers, we chose the Deep Fried Wontons which are stuffed with morsels of shrimp. Our first dish was Kung Pao Shrimp and WB also ordered the Mongolian Beef. Each plate came with your choice of a small bowl of steamed rice or fried rice for a buck more (we had one of each). I had an iced tea, the wife had a pot of hot Jasmine tea and WB had a Corona.

Everything was good, service was better than normal for this place.

WB popped for dinner this time ($41 plus), I threw in the tip ($6) and the Boy had opted out of this one and went to Mimi's Cafe in Santee.
